Michigan football made some major upgrades to its 2021 recruiting class on Wednesday and here are three thoughts on the Wolverines epic signing day.

If you’re a Michigan football fan, you have to be feeling pretty good right now after a signing day that was better than expected.

There was a strong hope that Michigan was going to flip defensive tackle Ikechukwu Iwunnah who was committed to Colorado and the Wolverines did that, getting his signature Wednesday.

But Michigan football fans were treated to another signing day surprise, one that has a much bigger impact as Rayshaun Benny flipped from Michigan State and signed with U-M.

It was a huge recruiting victory for the Wolverines for multiple reasons, least of which is that it takes away the top recruit from Michigan State’s class. The Spartans don’t have any of the top-15 recruits in the state of Michigan signed as part of their 2021 class.

The Wolverines are often criticized for their lack of in-state recruiting but if Benny is any indication, the addition of Ron Bellamy is going to be a game changer.

Here’s more on the day for Michigan football with three thoughts on national signing day

Michigan fills a major need and with talent

This goes without saying, but it was really impressive how Michigan was able to close in the late period. The Wolverines needed defensive tackles/defensive lineman and the staff delivered.

George Rooks, who signed on Wednesday, may not be a true defensive tackle, but he will be a perfect fit in the new system and he’s a really good pass rusher, both on the edge and as a defensive tackle, which could allow him to play some right away.

Benny is a beast. He’s 6-foot-5, 275 pounds and ranked 195th in the 247 sports composite rankings. He’s sixth in the state of Michigan and 16th among defensive tackles.

Rooks is also ranked 260th overall and is another solid four-star prospect. Landing two four-star defensive tackles on signing day as well as a 6-foot-4, 281-pounder in Iwunnah and it’s fair to say defensive tackle isn’t as big a need as it once was.

The Wolverines should still hit the portal but in 2022, they already have two defensive tackles committed. Yet, it’s clear the position is going to be a focus going forward as it should be.
