Michigan Football: Positive news on 5-star cornerback Will Johnson
It looks like Michigan football‘s new hires are gaining some momentum on the recruiting trail and in the recruitment of five-star Will Johnson, the Wolverines got some good news.
According to Rivals, Johnson, who is ranked 8th overall in the class of 2022 according to the 247 sports composite rankings, as well as the No. 4 cornerback, is going to wait to make a decision and that’s a good thing for the Wolverines.
Fellow five-star cornerback Domani Jackson made a decision over the weekend and there was some thought that the two would play together.
USC, which got Jackson, also hosted Johnson for a visit and a decision was expected sooner rather than later and now, Rivals is reporting that Johnson wants to wait and it has to do with Michigan’s new hires.
"“He wanted to visit USC and then should have a commitment made within weeks, but now wants to pump the brakes and slow it down. There are numerous reasons for this: The word is that Johnson likes a lot of the Michigan assistant hires especially defensive backs/co-defensive coordinator Maurice Linguist from the Dallas Cowboys.”"
Breaking down the impact for Michigan
From the moment Linguist was hired, he’s been making waves on the recruiting trail, getting Michigan involved where it wasn’t before and giving the Wolverines a legitimate shot.

He’s doing the same with Johnson and is one of the reasons why the top recruit in the state of Michigan wants to hold off on making a decision.
Linguist was a dynamic recruiter while he was at Texas A&M and there seems to be little doubt that he will have the same kind of success with Michigan football.
Of course, one of his first priorities and probably the top priority for the entire program in 2022 is getting Johnson to stay at home.
The biggest threat is Ohio State and seeing a five-star cornerback go out of state to play for the Buckeyes would be brutal. Yet, USC also can’t be ruled out.
Still, the fact that Johnson wants to give Michigan and Linguist in particular a chance to recruit him is a positive sign and if he wasn’t serious about Michigan, it seems like he would just make a decision anyway.
The Wolverines still have a long way to go, but at least they are still in it with a chance to win his commitment.
