Michigan football has had the crystal ball lead with four-star safety prospect Isaac Thompson but now he’s trending away from the Wolverines.

With so much uncertainty surrounding its head coach, it’s going to be hard for Michigan football to win a lot of recruiting battles.

While the signing day for 2022 recruits is more than a year away, one of Michigan football’s top targets in the class — Isaac Thompson — a four-star safety out of St. Louis, Missouri is set to make a commitment decision on Friday.

Thompson was among the recruits who took a self-guided visit to Ann Arbor last month and after that, the Wolverines seemed to be in a solid position. They even started trending with expert picks from Rivals and 247 sports.

But now, one day ahead of the decision, things seem to be trending in the other direction. After controlling 100 percent of his Futurecast picks, the Wolverines are now sitting at 80 percent after a Rivals expert predicted Thompson to land with the in-state school, Missouri.

According to Brice Marich of the Michigan Insider ($), head coach Jim Harbaugh is speaking with Thompson today and maybe that will make a difference. But Thompson also took a self-guided visit to Arkansas over the weekend and that shows it’s far from a done deal.

There hasn’t been a full trend of picks yet but you can’t feel great about Michigan’s chances right now, just like I don’t feel good about where the Wolverines stand with Xavier Worthy.

At 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, Thompson is one of the top safeties in the class of 2022 and is ranked 11th at his position and No. 157 overall according to the 247 sports composite rankings. In other words, he would be a really good get for Michigan football.

Missing out in favor of Arkansas or Missouri would be a tough blow, especially after being the favorite just a couple of weeks ago. When he started visiting other places, I was a little more concerned but these aren’t the big-name SEC schools you normally worry about.

Just because one expert picks Missouri also doesn’t make it true. Yet, it’s never good to see that sort of thing coming in for another team this close to decision day, because it could mean someone actually has inside knowledge. It could also be an educated guess but still, things aren’t really in the Wolverines favor at this moment.

We’ll see if Harbaugh and Michigan can shore things up before tomorrow but one way or another, for recruiting purposes, Michigan football needs clarity sooner rather than later at head coach.
