Top 2022 Michigan Football recruit trending to MSU too
More bad news on the recruiting trail as one of the top recruits for Michigan football in 2022 was projected to Michigan State on Tuesday.
When it rains, it pours, especially in recruiting and it seems like Michigan football is taking yet another hit for its loss to Michigan State last Saturday.
While on-field results always matter in recruiting, when you have an in-state rivalry like the one between the Wolverines and Spartans, it matters even more and the win by Michigan State is definitely making an impact.
Four-star defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny, who had been projected to Michigan football for months, had his experts picks flip to Michigan. Now it looks nearly guaranteed he will choose the Spartans on Sunday.
That loss will be painful in the 2021 class, but now it looks like one of the best recruits in the state of Michigan in 2022 is trending to the Spartans as well.
Dillon Tatum, another four-star recruit out of West Bloomfield, is considered by many schools, including Michigan football as a two-way recruit or as an athlete. He plays running back just like his teammate Donovan Edwards, but he is also a lights-out defender.
Michigan did have an expert pick from EJ Holland, but now the Spartans own 67 percent of his Tatum’s Futurecast picks.
Corey Robinson, a Michigan State reporter placed a Futurecast pick for Benny on Monday and was one of two MSU experts to do the same for Tatum on Tuesday.
More negative in-state momentum against Michigan
Tatum is ranked as the No. 249 prospect in the 2022 recruiting class according to 247 sports and as of right now, he doesn’t have any crystal ball projections. He’s also the No. 14 athlete nationally and the fifth-best player in the state of Michigan.
Robinson credits Michigan State running backs coach William Peagler for doing a great job with Tatum and while the Wolverines have been recruiting him hard, it’s not really shocking to see another in-state recruit rumored to be going to MSU.
An even bigger concern with Tatum is that he is teammates with Edwards, the top remaining target now for U-M. He’s a top-50 recruit and one of the top-ranked running backs in 2021, so landing him would still give Michigan plenty of recruiting momentum going forward.
However, you can expect the Spartans to make a continued push with him and if they have that solid a relationship with Tatum, coupled with their impressive win, they could create some momentum, although it’s not likely Edwards spurns U-M for Michigan State. The SEC seems much more likely to be the destination.
