There are already rumblings of Michigan State gaining momentum with Rayshaun Benny and that it could flip Michigan football commit Andrel Anthony.

If Michigan football fans didn’t have enough to worry about with the recruitment of Rayshaun Benny, there is now some concern that current commit Andrel Anthony could flip to Michigan State.

Anthony, like Benny is an in-state recruit and he committed to the Wolverines in August over the Spartans in the first real recruiting battle between Jim Harbaugh and Mel Tucker.

Michigan State appeared to be the favorite before a late push by the Wolverines allowed them to land Anthony’s commitment.

Yet, two days after the Spartans stunning win in the Big House, Anthony, who is from East Lansing, tweeted out something ominous.

And to add to that, Allen Trieu of 247 sports is reporting (subscription required) that there is something going on with Anthony. He essentially said the same thing about Benny.

If Benny does end up choosing Michigan State this Sunday instead of Michigan football that would be a tough blow but it wouldn’t be that shocking,, especially considering that Spartans had made headway in his recruitment already.

But if Anthony flips to Michigan State, it will definitely hurt. The Wolverines would not only be losing a talented wide receiver who could very easily out play his three-star ranking, but it would also be a huge blow for in-state recruiting.

The narrative that Michigan football doesn’t recruit the state very well is already out there. Things have improved and U-M does a much better job than its perceived of doing, but if the Wolverines lose two in-state guys to MSU in short order, perception will start meeting reality.

Benny is supposed to make his announcement this Sunday, so we will see what happens in the following days but I would watch his expert picks closely. All of them are with Michigan right now, but we all know that can change and MSU seems to have renewed momentum.

While Michigan would still have Xavier Worthy and Christian Dixon committed at receiver, losing Anthony would force U-M to scramble if it wanted to fill that spot with another receiver which seems likely because two just doesn’t seem like enough.

Michigan doesn’t have any commitments at defensive tackle and Benny has been the priority there for ages, so that would be a killer too.

And things could get even worse from there, especially if the Wolverines don’t turn things around on the field.
