Michigan Football: More bad news for 2021 recruiting class
Not only did top safety target Daymon David commit to Oregon Friday, but a linebacker commit got a crystal ball elsewhere too.
Things have been going less than ideal for Michigan football in terms of the 2021 recruiting class and unfortunately, more bad news is on the horizon.
For starters, Michigan football missed out on a top target in the 2021 class and that was four-star safety Daymon David, who announced his commitment to Oregon Friday.
The Wolverines pushed really hard for David and they might still keep trying to recruit him, especially since he has hasn’t visited Oregon. He hasn’t been to Ann Arbor either.
At one time, the Wolverines were considered the favorite for David or at least when it was a two-horse race with Boston College. But then Oregon offered and it changed everything.
Is a 2021 flip coming?
Last week, Michigan football lost a 2021 pledge when Markus Allen decommitted and now, it looks like another long-time commit will be flipping his commitment soon.
Three-star linebacker Casey Phinney, who ranks outside the top 1,000 in the 247 sports composite rankings has been committed to the Wolverines since April, but on Thursday, Brian Dohn of 247 sports ($) placed a crystal ball projecting a flip to Boston College.
"“After checking with sources, I entered a Crystal Ball pick for the Eagles to flip Michigan inside linebacker commit Casey Phinney.”"
Phinney is the teammate of former Michigan football recruiting target Drew Kendall, who is also being projected to Boston College, which is probably a factor in Phinney if he flips.
The loss of Phinney probably won’t cause Michigan fans to freak out too much, since he’s ranked as the No. 50 inside backer in the 2021 class, but it does take away some depth.
Michigan still has four-star linebacker Jaydon Hood, as well as three-star inside linebacker Tyler McLaurin. If the Wolverines lost either commitment, it would leave them thin at linebacker.
And both McLaurin and Hood have been recruited by other programs, despite their commitments to U-M. Miami, which is Hood’s hometown school, is making a stronger push and Minnesota has also been involved.
I can’t see Michigan losing Hood to the Gophers, but he hasn’t visited Michigan and he won’t be able to before committing, so it’s something to watch.
McLaurin seems pretty solid, so I doubt there’s anything to worry about there. But overall, the 2021 class is starting to get a little light with just 20 commitments once this flip becomes official.
