Michigan Football: What’s next after Markus Allen decommitment?
No one seemed to know Markus Allen’s decommitment from Michigan football was coming but now the Wolverines have to look for other 2021 wideouts.
There was no warning about the decommitment of Markus Allen from Michigan football‘s 2021 recruiting class Wednesday.
While these things are hard to see coming sometimes, there was no inkling that Allen was unhappy with Michigan except a series of cryptic tweets he sent out over the past few days.
EJ Holland of Rivas ($) said that things are completely over too. He wrote after speaking with a source that Allen will wind up at a different school.
"“I did check in with a program source and was only told that Markus decided to go elsewhere. This is speculation on my part, but I feel like not getting surgery on the torn labrum may have played a role. After all, Markus was set to be an early enrollee. It’s definitely a weird one. “"
Holland did provide one positive note, because one of my first thought went to Allen’s teammate Rod Moore, who is also out of Clayton, Ohio. He told EJ ($) that he’s still solid to U-M.
Where does Michigan turn at wide receiver?
It’s pretty obvious who the Wolverines will target next at wide receiver and that’s four-star Jayden Thomas out of Georgia.
Michigan was actually thought to be a favorite of sorts at one time with Thomas, in part because he is interested in playing baseball and has a really good relationship with the baseball staff.

The Wolverines were willing to let him play baseball and even after having four commitments, Michigan sent him an official offer, just like it did with Tavierre Dunlap, even though U-M wasn’t recruiting him super hard at the time.
Obviously, things with Dunlap turned around quickly and it’s possible the same thing happens with Thomas if he becomes the priority again.
Thomas has a pair of crystal ball projections to Notre Dame, both with a high confidence level. However, one thing to keep in mind is that those crystal ball picks came in after the Wolverines landed the commitment of Andrel Anthony.
It didn’t look like Michigan was going to take five receivers at the time and so with U-M out of the mix, it made sense that Notre Dame would emerge as the favorite.
But all along, Thomas has indicated he wants to make a decision later in the process, closer to early signing day, so Michigan should have ample time to turn things around here.
There are some other options and according to Holland ($), the coaching staff is evaluating other targets too, so keep an eye out for other names.
Yet, Thomas is probably the most realistic recruit, at least in the four-star range. Even so, he’s not Allen in my opinion, however, he would be a solid fallback option after Allen’s surprising decision.
