Michigan Football: Other safety options for Wolverines in 2021
It looks like Michigan football won’t get Daymon David in 2021, so here’s a look at some other safety possibilities in that cycle.
The recruiting board for Michigan football in the class of 2021 is dwindling even more and soon, we can probably remove then name of Daymon David.
David is trending with crystal ball picks to Oregon and it seems like he will eventually be committing to the Ducks, leaving Michigan without another key target.
Following the commitment of Kamonte Grimes to Nebraska, Michigan really went all in on David as essentially the only legitimate defensive back target remaining.
But now that he’s likely off the board, another target could emerge and he’s currently committed to Georgia Tech. The recruit in question is three-star Kaleb Edwards, who pledged to the Yellow Jackets back in July.
At 6-foot, 195 pounds, Edwards ranks 636th in the 247 sports composite rankings and is 47th among safeties. He got some mention in the early summer and the Wolverines have been staying in touch according to Brice Marich of the Michigan Insider ($).
"“I talk with Coach Shoop a lot,” Edwards said recently. “He’s been sending me info about Michigan every day and making sure I know that they’re taking a serious look at me and they like me at safety.”"
Edwards chose Georgia Tech over some others including Notre Dame, Iowa, Michigan State, and Stanford. But a Michigan offer could change things.
“I’m not really sure,” Edwards said to Marich ($). “I take everything into consideration, but I wouldn’t know unless the offer came through.”
If ever there was a time for Michigan to make that offer, it would be now, since the Wolverines really don’t have any other realistic options at safety right now.
The Wolverines have still been recruiting Titus Mokiao-Atimalala, a top-rated athlete out of Hawaii who could play receiver or safety at U-M according to another report from Marich ($).
Up to this point, it seems like Michigan has recruited him more as a safety and that might be since they had four receivers committed. But now that Markus Allen has decommitted, there’s an extra spot at receiver, and it will be interesting to see if there is a push here.
Like Jayden Thomas, another receiver target, Mokiao-Atimala has a crystal ball projection to Notre Dame. However, things still appear pretty open and he’s friends with current Michigan receiver Roman Wilson, so if the Wolverines push, they could have a legitimate shot.
