Michigan football is now trailing Oregon when it comes to three-star safety Daymond David in the 2021 recruiting class.

Just a few days ago, there was hope that Michigan football was emerging as the leader for three-star safety Daymond David.

However, despite getting a Futurecast pick from EJ Holland of Rivals, the Wolverines now appear to be trailing Oregon, which has picked up a trio of crystal ball projections in the last few days.

Michigan offered David over the summer and emerged as one of the top teams along with Boston College and Oklahoma. Oklahoma went elsewhere and at that point, Oregon jumped in with an offer.

That changed the dynamic of this recruitment from a two-team race to a three-team race and if the crystal balls are correct, the Ducks are pulling away. David is supposed to decide this month.

If David does choose Oregon, it will leave Michigan with just two defensive backs committed in the 2021 class. Three-star Rod Moore is the only safety recruit right now, while Ja’Den McBurrows is the only commitment currently at cornerback.

David is a physical defender and would have been a nice fit in the secondary, but unless something changes, he looks to be headed out west.

A new O-line target?

Recruiting hasn’t gone all that well for Michigan in the past month and it started with missing on Rocco Spindler and then Drew Kendall, who still hasn’t made a decision.

We know that Kendall won’t wind up at Michigan. Following that news, it appeared as though Michigan might be done with offensive line recruiting, but now Brice Marich of the Michigan Insider ($) is reporting that might not be the case.

The name to watch is Diego Pounds, who already holds a Michigan offer. He’s a 6-foot-6, 305-pound offensive tackle from North Carolina. Yet, he currently has five crystal ball projections to Penn State.

Ed Warinner was in contact with him a few months back, but this recruiting battle has been mostly about Penn State and North Carolina, so I wouldn’t have real high expectations here.

It does jive with the idea that Michigan is all set on the interior offensive line with Greg Crippen and Raheem Anderson though. The Wolverines continued to recruit Nolan Rucci until he committed to Wisconsin this week, so they are looking at offensive tackle.

Now, with the decommitment of Markus Allen, another scholarship has opened up too, which means there could be an extra spot for someone who maybe didn’t have one before.
