The top point guard recruits are going off the board quickly in the 2021 recruiting class and that’s why Michigan basketball needs to land one soon.

If you’ve been wondering when Michigan basketball would offer 2021 point guard recruit, Frankie Collins, you don’t have to wait any longer as the offer came down Friday to Collins.

Collins is a four-star point guard in the 2021 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings and he ranks 57th overall, as well as the No. 9 point guard.

He released a top-8 list earlier this summer and despite not having an offer from U-M, Collins included the Wolverines in his list.

According to The Michigan Insider ($), that’s due in part to his long-standing relationship with Juwan Howard. Here’s what Collins told Josh Henschke following his offer:

"“They started recruiting me at the beginning of my junior year and then they watched me play in December. Ever since then we have been in touch all during the quarantine. Also, me and Juwan Howard have a relationship since I was in the 4th grade and I would always play against his son (Jace). We have a couple of pictures together as well.”"

Chris Balas of Rivals reported ($) before the offer Friday that one could come if Collins’ transcripts checked out since he’s been to a few different schools, but that appears to be a go.

And when looking at the 2021 recruiting class for the Wolverines, who desperately need a point guard, the options are running out.

Jalen Warley, a five-star target at point guard, is expected to choose Florida State on Sunday. Angelo Brizzi is another target that came off the board recently to Villanova.

That prompted the Wolverines to get into the mix with Carter Whitt, who got an offer from Michigan recently and now it seems Whitt and Collins are the top targets left at point guard.

Balas noted that Whitt was thought to be a Florida lean not long ago, but that Corey Evans, the national Rivals’ recruiting analyst, believes that’s not the case.

Whitt is a really good ball-screen point guard and is very effective at creating for teammates, while Collins is elite at getting to the bucket. He’s an attacking guard and he would be a great fit.

Neither player is really an elite shooter per se, but both are good enough in that area. And right now, Michigan needs a point guard in 2021, which means that Whitt and Collins are it.
