Michigan Basketball: 4-star Frankie Collins interested in Wolverines

Michigan Basketball hasn’t fallen off the radar for four-star Frankie Collins and was among his final eight schools listed.

Have you ever watched someone on the court and you just knew they slept with a basketball in their bed? Michigan basketball’s 2021 target Frankie Collins is that someone and he dropped some exciting news.

The 6-foot-1-inch point guard, who plays for Compass Prep in Arizona, announced he was down to his final eight schools and U-M made the list, along with New Mexico, Gonzaga, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Arizona State, USC, and Kansas.

Frankie is ranked 58th nationally, the ninth-best PG, and No. 3 from Arizona, per the composite. 247 sports internally has Collins a little lower at 79th nationally, the tenth-best PG, and No. 5 in-state.

ESPN ranks him at 41st nationally, seventh positionally, and third in-state while Rivals has him at 68th nationally and 12th positionally.

Here’s a look at what Frankie Collins can do on the court:

There haven’t been any reports of an offer extended to Collins and the Wolverines have some very obvious PG targets that are ranked slightly higher or slightly lower. One of those is five-star Jalen Warley, who has family ties to Phil Martelli, and three-star Angelo Brizzi. Both seem very interested in the program, which made this announcement all the more unexpected.

Still, it’s good news for the Wolverines as Collins is probably closer to being in the top 50 rather than out of it, the rankings just haven’t reflected that, yet.

It’s important to note there are reports that Frankie will transfer back to Nevada where he will play with five-star Jaden Hardy, who the Wolverines have spent a lot of time on. Hardy has family in Michigan which as opened the door, but Kentucky is believed to be the leader in his recruitment.

With a fellow certified star on the roster, a lot of the attention will be taken off Collins and he might be able to make significant strides in his rankings, and potentially earn additional scholarship offers – including one from Ann Arbor.

Scouting

Collins has a flashy and yet efficient play style that includes no-look passes, explosive playmaking, top-notch perimeter play, and a nasty cross over that’s broken many ankles over his short career. His ball control is phenomenal and he’s got deceptive speed and leaping ability. At 6-foot-1, you would assume he would stick to layups, but not for Frankie, he’s going for a dunk and enjoys the occasional alley-oop.

Matt’s musings

Barring a commitment from another PG, Frankie has the talent to become a starter from day one and the Wolverines are in desperate need of depth at the position. Zeb Jackson is either a one or a two guard and Brandon Wade is the only other option as it stands today.

That could be a selling point for Collins, especially if the staff feels they are getting anywhere with other prospects at the position.
