Michigan Football: Elite 2021 tight end wants to visit Wolverines
Michigan football is still in the mix for four-star tight end Thomas Fidone who said he hopes to visit the Wolverines this fall.
Not long ago, I looked at how likely or unlikely it was for some of Michigan football‘s top 2021 targets to commit to the Wolverines.
One of the top targets was four-star tight end Thomas Fidone, who has long been on the wish list of Michigan football fans for the 2021 recruiting class. His commitment was rated not likely.
Fidone is out of Council Bluffs, Iowa and is rated 90th overall in the 247 sports composite rankings, as well as 2nd among tight ends. He’s 6-foot-5, 225 pounds and was compared by Allen Trieu of 247 sports to Zach Ertz.

Yet, Fidone has been trending to Nebraska. For whatever reason, in-state Iowa hasn’t really been a factor lately and the Huskers have become the favorite as they currently hold 93 percent of his crystal ball predictions with a confidence level of six out of 10.
LSU is the other team that has crystal ball projections. While Michigan doesn’t have any recruiting experts projecting to Fidone to U-M, the coaching staff has been working hard to get him and continues to do so according to Brice Marich of The Michigan Insider ($).
Here’s what Fidone had to say about Michigan:
"“I have talked to (Head) Coach (Jim) Harbaugh a few times. We FaceTimed a few times. It was very cool. Obviously, he’s a great guy and great coach. Coach (Sherrone) Moore is really relatable. He’s got that younger mindset. He’s very smart and knows what he’s talking about and knows what he’s doing. He kind of relates to all of us in a good way, so I like him a lot.”"
Fidone also told Marich that LSU and Michigan were schools he was hoping to visit if recruits are allowed to take official visits again. That means a decision is still a ways off, so there could still be time to sway him.
Michigan already has Louis Hansen committed in the 2021 class and the tight end from Massachusetts happened to make my list of sleepers.
So it’s not like the Wolverines are in desperate need of a tight end. With Fidone, it’s less about actual need and just landing an elite prospect. Jake Butt was the last game-changing tight end Michigan had and while Hansen has tons of potential, I wouldn’t mind seeing both at U-M.
