Rayshaun Benny is a top priority for Michigan football in the 2021 recruiting class and one top recruiting expert predicted him to the Wolverines.

When it comes to the 2021 recruiting class for Michigan football, there are few recruits who are more important than four-star defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny.

Benny is a 6-foot-5, 275 pound lineman that some teams prefer on the offensive side of the ball. However, Michigan football prefers the Oak Park product on defense.

According to the 247 sports composite rankings, he’s 189th overall and in the Rivals’ rankings, Benny is 86th. While Donovan Edwards and Rocco Spindler are among the top targets on offense, Benny tops the list on defense.

And if Steve Lorenz, a recruiting expert for The Michigan Insider ($) is correct, Benny will wind up for Michigan football as he placed a crystal ball for the Wolverines with the four star Tuesday.

Lorenz said that he heard some positive news back from a source and that gave him the confidence to put in the pick for Benny. Lorenz indicated in comments he was going to give his confidence a rating of around six on the scale of 1-10.

Either way, it’s a significant crystal ball for Michigan football and if the Wolverines do indeed land Benny, it would be a crucial addition to the 2021 class. George Rooks is another four-star defensive tackle who is looking like a Michigan commit, however, he could ultimately be a defensive end, so Benny’s big body is needed.

Additionally, Benny is just a really solid player. Some programs are recruiting him hard as an offensive lineman such as Ohio State and Penn State. Iowa was pushing for him at one time too. Yet, he has 36 offers so really, teams from across the country have been in on his recruitment.

Michigan has been recruiting him harder than anyone, at least according to Benny, so that’s another feather in the cap of the Wolverines. They also prefer he plays defense, which matches his preference.

Like Spindler and Edwards, Benny has talked about taking visits and making a decision later in the process, closer to the early signing day. But that could be changing. Spindler and Edwards appear open to making earlier decisions and maybe Benny will too.

Regardless, Michigan appears to be the clear leader in this key recruiting battle and for now, that’s what matters.
