Angelo Brizzi

Back in February, Angelo Brizzi was talking about the top five schools that are prioritizing him. Those programs included Yale, Dartmouth, Old Dominion, Furman, and George Washington. Universities known more for academics than their basketball teams.

The world has changed for Angelo.

In April, Villanova offered, and then Georgetown, and then Cal, and so on. By May, all the top basketball programs had extended offers to Brizzi, including Michigan.

Eventually, 247 sports caught on and raised Angelo’s ranking to three-stars and dropped him just outside the top 100 at 128. His composite is even higher at 112, the 17th best PG, and No. 4 from Virginia where he plays for Highland High School, and when there’s not a pandemic, he sports the Team Curry jersey as his AAU program out of Charlotte, NC.

While his basketball skills seem to be top-notch and he’s clearly on the rise, he might be an even better student in the classroom. Angelo touts a 4.25 GPA, which brought him attention from the Ivy League and now from Michigan.

Mainly, the relationship has been with associate head coach Phil Martelli, who has a strong relationship with Angelo’s dad.

“When he went to Michigan, he (Martelli) contacted me directly. We’ve been in touch since then,” Brizzi said. “I’ve always been talking to him, and I spoke with Coach Howard probably two or three weeks ago [in late April] for the first time on a Zoom call.”

When his junior year concluded, Brizzi had averaged 20.3 points-per-game, 6.6 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.2 steals.

Matt’s musings

The Wolverines struck gold with their first commitment of Isaiah Barnes for the 2021 class. Barnes, much like the three listed in this article, is criminally underrated.

Unlike Barnes, there is no deadline for the three prospects mentioned in terms of a commitment date. You should still pay attention to these three as the interest is mutual and all three have high-major talent and interest in Michigan. If they don’t land in Ann Arbor, they all will be setting records at their respective schools. At the moment, however, Michigan is in good standing and trending with the trio.
