Michigan Football: 4-star commit Louis Hansen will be a weapon
Michigan football landed its third commitment in the last week or so as four-star tight end Louis Hansen pledged to the Wolverines. Here’s how he will fit.
Sometimes, things just make too much sense and that seems to be the case with four-star tight end Louis Hansen and the Michigan football program.
Just one day after the Wolverines started to trend with crystal balls for the highly-touted tight end out of Massachusetts, the top-200 prospect made things official Thursday, announcing his commitment to Michigan football via Twitter.
Hansen is a big-time get for the Wolverines. He ranks eighth among tight ends in the composite rankings of 247 sports and is listed as the 187th overall prospect in the 2021 class. And what’s even better is that he will be a perfect fit in the offense of offensive coordinator Josh Gattis.
Hansen is 6-foot-4 and a half, nearly 6-foot-5 and he plays like it. He’s does a lot of stuff going over the middle and while he has some work to do in terms of blocking, his blocking skills aren’t the reason why Michigan football fans should be so excited about his commitment.
He’s the kind of tight end that Gattis and head coach Jim Harbaugh will be able to move around. Just as with Sean McKeon last year, Nick Eubanks and even Erick All, these guys will need to be able to block and Hansen too, especially with all the screens U-M runs with wide receivers.
But having a versatile tight end like Hansen who can be a dangerous threat in the passing game is paramount and he’s an exciting prospect. He can line up in the slot, split out wide and no matter where he goes, he will be a matchup nightmare.
With his size, he will be tough for defensive backs to deal with, while being fast enough that one-on-one against a linebacker should be a good matchup too. His 247 sports profile projects that he will eventually get drafted and should be a multi-year starter, which is good considering Michigan doesn’t have tons of depth at tight end.
Hansen will be coming in the same recruiting class as five-star quarterback J.J. McCarthy and it’s safe to say the two could be teaming up for some red-zone touchdown passes down the road. At least, that has to be the hope.
