The offense

Shea Patterson set the record for the most amount of yards thrown by a Michigan quarterback vs. Michigan State. It was a good day, to say the least.

Quarterback

Grade: A

On second thought, Patterson deserves a grade higher than an A. Some might say that Michigan State has a bad team or they have a bad defense, but that’s the opposite of the truth. All three of Penn State’s Sean Clifford (189), Wisconsin’s Jack Coan (180), and Ohio State’s Justin Fields (206) threw for fewer yards when they met the Spartans and the only one to come close to Shea’s incredible day which was former Michigan quarterback and current Illini, Brandon Peters (369),

Patterson’s 384 yards and four touchdowns will go down as one of the greatest single-game performances in Michigan’s history.

Running backs

Grade: C

Defensively, MSU couldn’t stop the bleeding through the air but they sure controlled the line of scrimmage. Zach Charbonnet‘s 30 yards led the running back squad, although, Giles Jackson is credited with the most rushing yards with 32 on his two carriers.

If you take away Shea’s 15 negative yards, the Wolverines fell two short of the century mark on the ground which is considered in the grade as Michigan State is ranked 14th for rushing defense.

Wide receivers

Grade: A

Much like Patterson, the receivers played off the charts and deserve a big chunk of the credit. Ronnie Bell was especially on fire with his nine catches for 150 yards and he accounted for the longest catch (42).

Donovan Peoples-Jones, Nico Collins, and freshman Cornelius Johnson all found their way into the end zone.

Tight ends

Grade: A

I don’t know what was in Sean Mckeon‘s pregame meal, but I know that’s what he needs to eat every time. Sean brought down two catches for 46 yards, and while Nick Eubanks didn’t have yardage Mckeon posted, he was able to get open in the end zone and Shea hit him for what was essentially the game-winning touchdown.

Offensive line

Grade: C

Patterson was sacked four times and holes were hard to find for the backs lowering the grade for this position group. Hassan Haskins TD run is arguably one of the highlights for the OL.
