The defense

MSU is sandwiched in between Maryland and Rutgers for fewest total yards when facing Michigan football.

Defensive line

Grade: A

Mike Danna is quietly establishing himself as one of the best defenders on the team after his sack and season-high six tackles in Saturday’s matchup. Brian Lewerke has been killing teams with his legs and yet against Michigan, he was held to under 20 yards.

Linebackers

Grade: A

Jordan Glasgow led the defense in tackles with 8 and he shared a sack with defensive tackle Carlo Kemp. That should earn his defensive player of the game honors and the job he’s done all year should be enough to get his name called at the NFL Draft in April.

And while Jordan was bringing in the stats, Cam McGrone was busy trolling the MSU sideline proceeding one of his big hits.

Cornerbacks/safeties

Grade: A

Here’s Lewerke’s stat line: 17/30, 166 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

Ambry Thomas and Lavert Hill each got their hands on a Lewerke thrown ball and true freshman Daxton Hill was credited with a pass deflection and two tackles.

Overall, the defense only gave up two ‘big plays’ (passing plays longer than 25 yards or rushing plays longer than 10) and limited the Spartans to fewer yards gained than what Maryland could muster earlier this month.
