Tru Wilson

One of the common questions brought up about the 2019 Michigan football team is the running back position since there doesn’t seem to be a clear-cut starter with the season less than two months away.

Christian Turner is going to be an option and he has progressed tremendously since his freshman season. Zach Charbonnet, the top offensive recruit from the 2019 class, will also figure into the mix. Had he been healthy this spring, fans likely wouldn’t be so worried. Yet, a knee scope held him out. However, he’s familiar with the offense now and should be 100 percent in fall camp.

Regardless, Michigan is still planning to rely heavily on a redshirt freshman and a true freshman that has never played a snap before (Charbonnet). That could be worrisome, however, one thing that should ease worries is the presence of veteran Tru Wilson.

Wilson is a former walk-on that carried the ball 62 times last season and averaged 5.9 yards per rush. While he certainly didn’t dominate last season, he has five games with 40-yards rushing or more and he is a stellar pass protector.

Charbonnet and Turner may end up being the top ball carriers next season, but whether as a ball carrier, a receiver or pass protector, Wilson will be a key presence next season and don’t be surprised if he winds up getting close to 1,000 total yards from scrimmage.
