Michigan Football: 5 key recruiting battles left for Wolverines in 2020
4-star TE Theo Johnson
When Michigan football started recruiting Theo Johnson, one of the best players from Canada, he was only a three-star prospect. Now, Johnson has surged up the rankings, all the way up to No. 242 nationally according to the 247 composite rankings. He’s also the No. 4 tight end.
At 6-foot-6, 240 pounds, Johnson is a matchup nightmare and he would be a perfect fit for the speed-in-space offense being instilled by Josh Gattis. In fact, when Johnson visited recently, he got a chance to talk to Gattis about his potential role and here is what he said to 247 sports:
"“He kind of said right now they don’t really have a guy, an iso guy. A third down guy. A very reliable, we need to get you the ball and we can count on you at all times. He was saying I could be a guy, just based on what he saw from me at camp, he said I could be a guy that could potentially step into that position and be an iso guy, a third down guy depending on what he saw in camp continues into during their camp, fall camp, whenever I’m there.”"
With his speed, size and hands, Johnson would be a tremendous weapon in any offense. Right now, his recruitment is down to Michigan, Penn State, Iowa and Georgia. Yet, Penn State is currently the favorite with 75 percent of his crystal balls.
The good news is that he won’t make a decision until sometime in October, so UM has time to turn this around and with Gattis and tight ends coach Sherrone Moore as the primary recruiters, there is still a chance Johnson winds up in Maize and Blue.
