Michigan Football: 5 reasons the offense will dominate in 2019
Return of Shea Patterson/QB Depth
The return of Patterson as the starting quarterback is a big deal, even though some Michigan football fans would rather see Dylan McCaffrey take over.
McCaffrey did show something as both a runner and thrower last season, but Patterson was once the top-ranked quarterback in the 2016 class for a reason. If he declared the draft, he would have been picked within the first few rounds, probably by the fourth at the latest.
He’s an accurate thrower, has a strong arm and has a nice touch on the deep ball. We saw that numerous times with bombs to Collins and Peoples-Jones, including the touchdown that broke open the Michigan State game.
However, even if you don’t like Patterson, you have to feel good about the depth Michigan has at quarterback. Even if Patterson were to get hurt, the Wolverines have both McCaffrey and Joe Milton behind him, not to mention incoming freshman Cade McNamara.
With a veteran quarterback and Patterson’s second year at Michigan, things should run even more smoothly, but regardless, Michigan has a few quality options at quarterback and that’s not something you could say even two years ago.
