Michigan Football vs SMU: How to watch, storylines and more
Michigan football will take on SMU Saturday afternoon in the Big House. Here’s everything you need to know about the Wolverines and Mustangs.
At the start of the season, the matchup between Michigan football and SMU didn’t seem so lopsided. After all, the American Conference has a decent amount of respect and the Mustangs were a 7-6 team last season, with a returning quarterback.
Obviously, Michigan football was always going to be a big favorite, yet 35 points is a pretty wide margin. However, after watching SMU during the first two games it’s understandable.
This same Mustangs team was crushed on the road by North Texas and also lost handily to TCU despite grabbing a 9-0 lead in the first quarter last week. It’s safe to say, so far, the Sonny Dykes experiment has not gone well. The air raid offense being employed by the Mustangs is averaging less than 250 yards per game.

Who are the Mustangs?
As referenced above, SMU is a team that is not off to a great start in 2018. Losses to North Texas and TCU have the Mustangs sitting at 0-2. However, what might be more disturbing is the way the Mustangs lost.
Michigan Wolverines
Even with returning quarterback Ben Hicks, the offense has been atrocious. It ranks 124th in the FBS out of 128 teams. The defense isn’t much better. The run defense isn’t bad but the pass defense ranks 110th in terms of yards allowed, so it could be a field day for Shea Patterson and the Wolverines pass attack.
After playing TCU in Dallas last week, the Mustangs won’t be intimidated by the Big House but I certainly wouldn’t expect them to hang around long with the Wolverines.
This week’s coverage
Earlier in the week, I pondered if SMU would be able to offer any resistance Saturday or if it would be another blowout like the Western Michigan game. Our own Mike Keenan also dove into the game and cranked out an in-depth preview that should give you everything you need to get primed for Saturday.
SMU may not be a feared opponent, but the Mustangs did lead the No. 16 team in the country for a quarter last week, so here are three keys to Michigan football not only winning but dominating.
Lastly, here are three predictions for the game on Saturday, on that note, I feel confident in saying it will be one-sided. My official prediction is 41-0 Wolverines. Thank goodness Big Ten football starts next week.
