Simpson deserves a shot to start

One issue that the Wolverines have been dealing with all season is some uncertainty at point guard. But after the way Simpson played against UCLA, especially down the stretch, it might be time for John Beilein to give him the job again.

Simpson hasn’t played great so far this season, but he also had his minutes reduced by Brooks, who also did good things against UCLA, including two made free throws that tied the game with 11 seconds left. However, Simpson did things Brooks isn’t capable of, not yet anyways.

After a terrible double dribble that appeared to cost Michigan, Simpson turned a corner. He played spectacular defense on Holiday down the stretch and finished with four steals. One of those steals came with Michigan down three, with under 30 seconds. It led to a layup and eventually allowed Brooks to have a chance to tie it at the line.

This is also the second consecutive strong showing for the sophomore, who also scored 11 points in a loss Monday to Ohio State. It’s obvious that Michigan basketball has two point guards worth playing, but with his defense and clutch play, Simpson deserves a shot at the starting gig again.
