It has been awhile since Michigan football has produced a solid tight end at the NFL level, which is strange given the fact that it used to be a factory for the position.

The Wolverines never really had a bunch of stars, but guys like Dan Campbell, Jerame Tuman, Aaron Shea, Jay Riemersma and others have done the Maize and Blue proud at the next level. Jake Butt, who showed plenty of potential in his first two seasons, catching 41 passes, could be the next in that great line.

Truthfully, Butt is everything you want in an NFL tight end and I was surprised when he decided to return to Michigan for the 2016 season.

Last year, Butt exploded onto the national scene, catching 51 passes for 654 yards and three touchdowns. He was a mismatch waiting to happen and he was a consistent producer. One thing NFL teams will love is that he has the ability to play in-line or split out. And his blocking is more than satisfactory.

When you combine his pass-catching ability, with his ability to make an impact in the run game as a blocker, the NFL won’t find many tight ends coming out of college more complete than Butt, who has a chance, in my opinion, to be a first-rounder.
