Alex Malzone (Freshman)

Unlike Gentry, Alex Malzone enrolled early this spring and competed during the much anticipated spring game. The four star recruit from Brother Rice Academy in nearby Bloomfield Hills, MI stands at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds. Malzone is one of the few recruits to stay through the coaching change, being recruited by Hoke and passed on to Harbaugh. This speaks volumes about his character and may give him a leg up in the hunt for a starting position. During his high school years, Malzone knew how to win. He accumulated two state championships in his four years with Brother Rice. After winning the second of the two, Malzone was named “Gatorade Player of the Year”. However, as we all saw in the spring game, he needs another year (or two) of grooming before he earns the starting spot. This spring we saw him go 15 of 27 for 95 yards and two interceptions. Watching his tape from this game shows the obvious; he’s still a high school quarterback adjusting to college game play. With a year of experience under his belt, Malzone will be among the front runners for the 2016-2017 starting position.
