After thrashing Michigan State, Michigan basketball is riding high. That has rarely been a sign of good things to come for the Wolverines, though.

As wonderful as it was to watch Michigan basketball beat up the Spartans on Tuesday to end a two-game losing skid, there’s still the fact that the Wolverines haven’t been able to sustain success.

With a road game against Indiana coming on Sunday, that’s a very worrying trend to consider. I sound like a broke record saying it, but Michigan is running out of time to put its NCAA tournament resume together. Right now, it’s not great.

The good news is there are quite a few chances down the final stretch of the season to pick up some quality wins. The bad news is that, inherently, those are quality opponents, ones that could just as easily beat up on Michigan in the worst way.

Games like the one coming up in Bloomington—they’re must-have wins, not optional.

Looking back at this season, I think we can point out four great performances from the Wolverines (five if you want to count UCLA). Those were against Marquette and SMU in the 2016 2K Classic, then Indiana, and now Michigan State.

Following Michigan’s dominance in New York, the Wolverines traveled to South Carolina and lost in what can only be adequately described in words I’m sure I can’t use here. Shooting 7 percent from behind the arc led to one of those games you couldn’t wait to end.

Jump forward to just a couple weeks ago, and Michigan absolutely handed it to Indiana. Then came a road loss to Michigan state, followed by an unforgivable home loss to Ohio State.

That brings us to present day, with Michigan riding another high note after beating the Spartans by 29 points.

A majority of Michigan’s remaining games are on the road. As you probably know, the Wolverines haven’t won a true road game this season. Indiana isn’t the best looking team in the Big Ten right now, but it’s still Assembly Hall in Bloomington. And it’s still a team the Wolverines handed it to not that long ago.

This doesn’t need to be another lopsided win—it just needs to be some kind of score that ultimately favors Michigan, whether by one point or 29.

If we’re looking to history for an indication of what’s to come, though, simply keeping this game close would be an improvement.
