The Wolverines have added a lot of players over the past week from the transfer portal, but they might not have landed anyone quite as impactful as Salesi Moa.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound athlete from Ogden, Utah, is ranked as the third-best "athlete" in the 2026 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings (No. 45 overall). However, after signing with the Utes, Moa recently entered the transfer portal.
That coincided with his brother, a former BYU and Michigan State linebacker, who had 12 tackles and one for loss with the Spartans last season, visiting Michigan over the weekend. It feels like both will be committing to Michigan soon.
At this point, a commitment feels inevitable. The Wolverines have gotten a slew of projections from the experts at Rivals, led by Steve Wiltfong. There are also two crystal ball projections at 247 Sports.
Salesi Moa has breakout player written all over him
If the predictions prove to be accurate, the Wolverines will be getting one of the most talented players available in the transfer portal. He's ranked as the No. 2 athlete because he could play cornerback or wide receiver. He's also ranked 23rd overall.
Moa is ranked higher in the transfer portal rankings than the high school recruiting rankings, which shows what kind of impact he can make. It's especially exciting because he will be a true freshman.
It's hard to know if Moa will play receiver or defensive back. The Wolverines have depth at both spots, but it feels like Michigan football hasn't recruited many receivers ranked this high. Moa could be a game-changing weapon for Bryce Underwood, one who could make an immediate impact.
A receiver group of Andrew Marsh, Jaime Ffrench, JJ Buchanan, Travis Johnson, and Salesi Moa reminds us of the good old days, when Michigan football used to have multiple NFL draft picks in the receiver room.
Moa could play both sides of the ball. He could even be a return guy. He runs a sub-11-second 100-meter dash, and my hunch is that wide receiver will be his home. The upside is too high.
Regardless of the position, expect to see Moa contributing on the field for Michigan football in 2026, as long as he commits as expected.
