If the Western Michigan debacle wasn't enough to embarrass Michigan football, Kyle Whittingham and the Wolverines made it worse by losing to a 2-6 Michigan State team on Saturday night. A humiliating loss to a program that was in worse shape than Michigan is beyond repairable and doesn't warrant any explanation, other than relieving him of his duties.

Michigan football needs to fire Kyle Whittingham

Michigan State's defense completely dominated Jason Beck's sluggish offense, which should have been shut out. They forced four turnovers and sacked Tommy Carr five times. To sum it up, Jordan Marshall has rushed for only four yards over the last two weeks. Four Yards! That's not Michigan football. On Saturday, Whittingham thought about bringing in Bryce Underwood to replace Carr, but decided against it. It probably wouldn't have even mattered either.

Even Nick Sheridan outschemed Whittingham. Michigan State's offense was dead last in the Big Ten coming in and Sheridan, who will probably also be on the unemployment line once the season ends in East Lansing, helped bring Paul Bunyan back to the darkside.

This is arguably the worst loss since 2020, when Michigan football was a heavy favorite over Michigan State. Somehow, the Wolverines retained Jim Harbaugh and extended him after that season, but Whittingham is not Harbaugh and has no ties to the program, making him a lame duck. He's on the brink of a losing season and refuses to acknowledge just how out of touch he is with reality.

He shows no emotion on the sidelines and looks clueless most of the time like Brady Hoke did. Glancing at his previous stop in Utah for a minute, they are on fire without him and knew his time was up. That's why they chose Morgan Scalley over him. It proves that Whittingham should have just retired or taken a less stressful job. It is very similar to the way that Pete Carroll ended his career in the NFL.

Unfortunately for Michigan, the Wolverines don't have an athletic director in place yet to do anything concrete. Hiring one by the end of this month will be vital if they want to go after someone available in college or shoot for the stars and poach someone who coaches on Sundays. The good thing is, hiring the right one who can turn Michigan into an instant winner is very feasible.
