Against the worst team in the Big Ten, Michigan football almost had as many turnovers (4) as it had points Saturday night at the Big House.

In the battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy, it wasn't much of a battle.

One team was hungry. One team wanted to be there, wanted to take home Paul Bunyan. The other team, Michigan, was sloppy from the start. Tommy Carr threw an interception on the first drive, and it didn't get any better from there in what ended up as a 15-6 loss.

It was the first Power-4 win of the season for Michigan State, as well as the first Big Ten win for Michigan State under Pat Fitzgerald.

Michigan's loss ended a four-game winning streak against its in-state rivals, and here are four instant takeaways.

Kyle Whittingham can't coach another game for Michigan

Whittingham will probably finish the season, but he can't come back. There is not a single thing to be excited about. The offensive line is awful. Jason Beck should have been let go a month ago, and the running game is beyond pathetic.

Whittingham is 66 years old. He's not building anything. He's washed up, over the hill, whatever you want to say. Michigan has to act accordingly.

Whittingham doomed himself with Jason Beck

Whittingham should have made a change weeks ago at offensive coordinator. Oregon did and the Ducks are back in the race for the College Football Playoff. It probably wouldn't matter, because the offensvie line is atrocious, but the coaching hasn't helped.

The Spartans held Michigan to 195 yards of total offense. This was the No. 84 scoring defense in college football. Beck should have been relieved of his duties after the Minnesota game.

Whittingham made a mistake hiring him. He made an even bigger mistake backing him when it was clear the offense was failing.

Those decisions ruined the season and ultimately led to Saturday's loss to Michigan State.

Tommy Carr shouldn't be playing

This coaching staff bungled things so badly. Bryce Underwood should still be out there. Without a running game, Tommy Carr stood no chance. He doesn't have the arm strength.

Carr wasn't supposed to play this season. This isn't really fair to him, but this game made it clear that Michigan needs to go to the portal for its starting quarterback next season.

Carr is worth developing. He will get bigger and stronger. Yet, he had a chance to lock down the starting job down the stretch, and that's probably out the window now. This Michigan State defense is terrible, and Carr completed 14 of 27 passes for 138 yards and two interceptions.

There is blame to go all around. The defense felt like it quit or just ran out of gas at the end. After everything it has done, it's understandable. Michigan's defense still kept MSU under 20, though, and didn't give up a touchdown. Most of the time, that's good enough to win.

Carr looks like a quarterback forced to play too early, and the Wolverines paid for it against Indiana and Michigan State.

Brady Hoke 2.0

This 15-0 nightmare felt as bad as anything we saw during the Brady Hoke era, or even when Rich Rodriguez was the head coach. That's how bad this season has been.

Saturday was the cherry on top.
