It doesn't even matter if Michigan football comes back to beat Michigan State. We have seen enough of the Kyle Whittingham era already.
After what is easily the worst Michigan-Michigan State game I can remember, Whittingham's team is a disaster.
Tommy Carr threw an interception on the first drive. The defense held, but after Carr drove the offense inside the 10, Whittingham passed up a 4th-and-2 to attempt a 26-yard field goal that doinked off the upright.
Michigan State, the worst team in the BIg Ten, a team without a win in the conference, leads the Wolverines at the half 6-0.
It could easily be 10-0. Of course, if Whittingham was smart enough to go for it, Michigan football might be leading. There was a time when getting a yard or two on fourth down was automatic.
Now, Michigan can't run the ball on the worst teams in the Big Ten.
The Wolverines had 42 rushing yards on 16 attempts in the first half against the Spartans. With a freshman quarterback in Tommy Carr, that's not good enough. The boo birds were out at Michigan Stadium, and it's hard to blame them.
Carr didn't play great. The boos really aren't about him, though. Whittingham is the one who tanked a rushing attack that averaged 210 yards per game last season. Many of the same pieces are back. Some of them are banged up, but it doesn't make much sense.
In a game between two bad teams, Michigan has a turnover and missed a 26-yard field goal.
What's crazy is that the six-point lead feels insurmountable. This offense can barely get a first down, let alone put another drive together.
Say what you want about Michigan State; the Spartans are playing hard. Michigan looks passive, sort of like their head coach looks old.
Maybe Michigan will figure something out. A win would be better than a loss, but the outrage shouldn't go away.
Whittingham isn't good enough to be the Michigan football head coach, and every second he remains in the job, the farther away the Wolverines will get from being relevant.
