Detmer is a name that is synonymous with football and the quarterback position. From BYU to Utah and now to Michigan. Koy is carving out his path like his father and uncle did in their respective football journeys.

Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham is putting his trust in him to shape the quarterback position into one of the finest in the land.

He'll have his hands full working with one of the most polarizing names under center, who struggled in many cases last year. Bryce Underwood needs a dedicated guru to fix his flaws and rectify his play. To do that, let's take a look at Detmer Jr.'s previous stops to see what went right and wrong and why it brought him to Michigan to be the next chosen coach to develop Underwood.

Studying Detmer Jr.'s past coaching experience

His first real test was at Syracuse, working with Garrett Shrader. In 2022, Shrader had a career year in passing yards and touchdowns. The Orange started 6-0 and were ranked in the top 15 before succumbing to Clemson. Shrader closed the season with three straight games of 285 yards or more. In 2023, he picked up where he left off, but fizzled down the stretch. Alongside Jason Beck at Syracuse, the quarterbacks jumped from the top 100 to the top 50 in no time.

Moving on to New Mexico, Devon Dampier became one of the most potent runners at the quarterback position. The duo would go on to join forces and Utah where Dampier flourished under Detmer Jr. and Beck. Dampier improved in every statistical category and was aided by the no.2 rushing attack in America.

There's optimism that he can replicate the success at Michigan because he's got more capital around him than ever. Although he's never faced a gauntlet quite like the Big Ten before. Ben McDaniels would have to be considered as the most recent quarterbacks coach to have the most success with Shea Patterson. When Jake Rudock had his most successful college campaign at Michigan, Jim Harbaugh was his primary coach that took his career to new heights. However neither player possesses the traits that Underwood was given. That's what Detmer Jr. has to unlock.
