When it comes to the 2026 recruiting class, Michigan football doesn't necessarily need another wide receiver.
As it stands, the Wolverines have three WR commitments. Travis Johnson and Zion Robison are each ranked in the top 150 overall of the 247 Sports composite rankings for the 2026 class. They are also each 6-foot-3 or taller.
Jaylen Pile is another solid wide receiver. He's a three-star prospect but is highly productive. the biggest criticism about him is a lack of upside due to average athleticism.
However, there could be another wide receiver target on the board, or there should be, and athleticism isn't his problem at all.
A flip Michigan football should attempt
After missing out on Calvin Russell, things have been pretty quiet. But Michigan recruiting insider EJ Holland, who covers the Wolverines for On3/Rivals, suggested that Michigan try to flip Samson Gash, an in-state wide receiver committed to Michigan State.
Gash, who is 6-foot, 180 pounds, is ranked No. 854 overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He's a three-star via the composite rankings and a four-star recruit via 247 Sports' own rankings in the 2026 class.
He's also the younger brother of former Michigan football player Isaiah Gash, who caught a critical pass in the Illinois win in 2022 to set up the game-winning field goal.
Gash, out of Novi, Michigan, had 731 receiving yards in 2024, as well as more than 300 rushing yards. He also runs 10.41 in the 100-meter dash, which is eye-opening. The Wolverines haven't offered or shown much interest, but it would be interesting to see what would happen if they did.
Gash has tremendous upside. He meeds more polish but after striking out on Russell, taking a shot on a dude with NFL bloodlines (son of Sam Gash) wouldn't be a bad idea.
It would also be fun to take a commitment away from Michigan State, especially one that could do damage on the field against the Wolverines down the road.
