Michigan football fans were excited at the prospect of landing five-star wide receiver Calvin Russell in the 2026 class, only it didn't work out.

However, Michigan still has three talented wide receiver commitments. Two of them, Zion Robinson and Travis Johnson, are ranked in the top 150 overall of the 2026 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.

Robinson is 6-foot-4. Johnson is 6-foot-3. So they have size and athleticism. It's a great wide receiver haul, but one name is often forgotten about, and that's three-star wideout Jaylen Pile.

An underatted commitment for Michigan football

Inexplicably, instead of rising in the latest rankings update, the 6-foot-1, 187-pound wideout out of Dallas, Texas, dropped down to No. 1,142 overall in the 2026 class.

Despite his ranking, Pile is viewed favorably by the Michigan football recruiting beat. Many expect him to perform well this season, with the chance of maybe improving his ranking. Ultimately, the ranking doesn't matter.

Michigan football fans know that as well as anyone. Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant, Rod Moore, Colston Loveland -- these were all players who were overlooked or ranked outside the top 200 overall.

Moore was ranked outside the top 1,000 at one point. Ohio State didn't have interest in him. But Michigan trusted what it saw. It's doing the same with Pile, and according to one college football legend, Robert Griffin III, Michigan fans will like what the Wolverines are getting in the three-star wideout.

"Meet (Jaylen Pile) from RG3 Take Select 7 on 7 football team. Strong, route technician who knows how to create separation and will run by you too. Michigan fans, you got yourself a playmaker at WR who lives for the big moments," RG3 posted on X.

That's high praise from RG3. Yes, Pile plays for his team, but that's still a strong endorsement. it's also easy to get overlooked in Texas. Pile wouldn't be the first or the last.

Regardless, that's one commitment fans can feel good about, even if the ranking doesn't match the kind player the Pile is.
