Balanced attacks on both sides of the football will determine which facet of the game Michigan will win with this season. Both Jason Beck and Jay Hill will be in their most pressure-packed jobs yet. The Wolverines have never had a top-five offense in their storied history, while the defense has rarely struggled recently, as it did in the loss to Texas.

Estimating which coordinator will have the most success

On offense, Beck has more talent than Hill inherits. He has a stable of running backs who can be slotted into the starting lineup and run for 100-plus yards almost any week. The offensive line has about six players or so who have returning experience, and the wideouts are the most talented that Michigan has had in about a decade.

Beck's offense scored 30 points or more in 11 games last season, compared to just five times that Michigan football did it in 2025. The passing game will be the key to getting the offense to be churning. Devon Dampier averaged 30 more yards a game than Bryce Underwood did passing, but only surpassed the 300-yard mark once last season. Five top-10 defenses from last year are in Beck's field of vision in 2026. Theoretically speaking, Underwood holds Beck's fortunes in his hands.

For Hill, he's got a star pass rusher who is poised to take Big Ten quarterbacks by storm. A five-star freshman (Carter Meadows), something he's never had the pleasure of coaching before, is a new toy for Hill to unveil. The secondary is filled with depth and veteran leadership. Getting something positive out of the linebackers can make or break Hill's defense.

BYU's defense gave up over 30 points per game in two losses to Texas Tech, but was 27 or less in every other contest. Hill's unit will be in the blender this year against some of the most publicized names in the business. The bar may be too high to for him to reach.

There's no question that Hill has history on his side, especially lately, while Beck has an uphill climb to take Michigan's offense into uncharted territory. Both took the job knowing the magnitude of the situation that they have entered, and the honeymoon will be on full display when the grueling schedule ramps up weekly.
