Michigan football just started fall camp a few days ago, but we have already learned plenty about the 2026 edition of the Wolverines.
The big topic of conversation all offseason, outside of the hire of Kyle Whittingham, the first-year Michigan football head coach, has been centered on Bryce Underwood, the former five-star quarterback ranked No. 1 in the 2025 recruiting class.
The in-state hero won nine games as a starter last season as a true freshman. He didn't quite meet the lofty expectations that he helped create for himself; however, Underwood has looked good so far in fall camp.
Not only does Underwood seem much improved, especially in terms of his footwork and throwing mechanics, but the Wolverines also seem to have drastically upgraded their wide receiver room.
True freshman makes Michigan football wide receivers even better
JJ Buchanan, the Utah transfer, has generated plenty of buzz. He caught a touchdown pass early in camp from Underwood. He also grabbed a back-shoulder fade thrown by Underwood. After the way he closed the season in 2025, Buchanan is due for a breakout in 2026.
Buchanan is just one reason to feel good about the receiver room. The Wolverines also have Andrew Marsh entering his second season. Jaime Ffrench came over from Texas. He is set to make an impact this season, along with two incoming freshmen, Salesi Moa and Travis Johnson.
Moa was ranked in the top 100 overall in the 2026 class. Johnson was ranked No. 125 overall. Yet, when people talk about freshman ready to make an impact right away for Michigan football, Johnson's name hardly gets mentioned.
That's starting to change, though, especially after he flashed on a couple of the highlights released by Michigan football on X this past week. Johnson had a nice catch from Tommy Carr on the first day of practice.

Yet, on Friday, Michigan put out some photos and videos on X. Johnson was shown making a contested catch, which checks out based on all the buzz Johnson has generated so far in fall camp.
The No. 3 wide receiver job is up for grabs after Buchanan and Marsh. Moa, French, and Johnson all bring something a little different. Johnson is 6-foot-3, 185 pounds out of Virginia. He was always talked about as a guy who can play right away.
We are seeing that so far in fall camp and the wide receiver room which has been a major question mark the past two seasons, suddenly feels like one of the Michigan's biggest strengths.
