The transfer portal opens later this week. It's an opportunity for teams, Michigan football included, to remake their rosters for the 2026 season.
In the case of the Wolverines, the most important thing is roster retention. New head coach Kyle Whittingham is working on that now. Things with Bryce Underwood, for instance, are trending in the right direction.
Other players have already said they are going to return such as Jake Guarnera and running back Jordan Marshall.
Andrew Marsh is another name to watch. If there is one player fans are worried about departing, outside of Underwood, Marsh is it.
However, the portal can giveth, just like it can taketh.
There will be some departures. Michigan football will make some additions, too. Here are three players in the portal that make sense and could easily wind up in Ann Arbor.
John Daley Henry, EDGE
The former Utah EDGE announced his intention to enter the transfer portal. At 6-foot-4, 255 pounds, John Henry Daley led the Big 12 with 17.5 tackles for loss last season. He also had 11.5 sacks and would fill the huge void being left by Derrick Moore, who is out of eligibility.
Henry Daley would be the perfect replacement. Michigan should also have the inside track on his commitment since Utah EDGE coach Lewis Powell is expected to follow head coach Kyle Whittingham to Michigan.
Henry Daley committed to BYU out of high school. He's got two years of eligibility and with his position coach expected to be in Ann Arbor, it's not crazy to think he would follow.
Eugene Wilson III, WR
Michigan football needs help at wide receiver. It could maybe use multiple players.
Eugene Wilson III of Florida is one in the portal who makes sense. As a freshman, he caught 61 passes for 538 yards. He's got 104 receptions during his career for 1,043 yards. Wilson only played four games in 2024 and saw action in eight games this season. He had 139 yards against Georgia, showing what he can do.
His former wide receiver coach, Billy Gonzalez, is a free agent after he was let go by the Gators new head coach. Gonzalez worked with Whittingham on Urban Meyer's Utah staff, so there's a chance he could end up at Michigan, depending on what happens with other assistant coach candidates.
Either way, maybe that relationship would be enough to make Michigan a player here. The Wolverines need wideouts, but it feels like Cam Coleman and Nick Marsh aren't really attainable.
Devan Thompkins, DL
Another position of need for Michigan football is the defensive line. The Wolverines don't need just an EDGE, they need interior defensive lineman, too.
Devan Thompkins would be an ideal candidate. He can play a few different spots. He's 6-foot-5, 290 pounds, and is one of the top defensive linemen in the portal. He's a proven producer in the Big Ten, too, with 31 tackles last season, 6.5 tackles for loss, and three sacks in 2025.
Thompkins is also familiar with the new Michigan coaching staff. He was recruited by Utah out of high school. Powell was his recruiter, and with him at Michigan, it feels like another connection could be forged at a key position for the Wolverines.
