Yesterday was a wake up call for Michigan football but don't hit the panic button yet

The loss vs Texas was not pretty. However, it is not time to panic just yet. Multiple areas need to be corrected but there is reason to believe this team can still rattle off some big wins this year.

Offense

The offense was bad yesterday. There is no other way to say it other than that. It did not consistently move the ball, the Wolverines turned it over and they were horrible on third down.

Let's start with the turnovers. This Michigan football team is simply not good enough to be able to turn the ball over three times and expect to beat a team like Texas. Two interceptions from Warren is unacceptable and has to change if they want to have success this year. This has to be a message that is getting drilled into Warren daily moving forward. Move the ball, and at least play for field position.

JJ McCarthy threw nine interceptions in 29 career starts and Warren already has three in two starts. The Loveland fumble was kind of a fluke play that we obviously won't consistently see from him.

However, it is an example of the overall issue with yesterdays game. The team looked sloppy and more unprepared than any Michigan team I can remember since 2020. Loveland caught it and didn't immediately tuck which led to the fumble.

Michigan has been so good at the little fundamental things the last three years and all those little things led to a big thing being accomplished. Secondly, this offense needs to find its identity and do so quickly. They need to be able to move the ball consistently to hopefully score points but flip the field at the very least. Michigan had all the momentum yesterday after Texas missed the field goal on their opening drive and what did the Wolverines do? Three and out and a punt that got touched down at the 45-yard line.

All that momentum goes immediately back to Texas because our offense could not move the ball for a single first down. Maybe the answer is using Orji more or maybe Warren needs to start making better reads/throws but it has to be figured out quickly.

Moore and Campbell are getting paid the big bucks now and this needs to be addressed in a hurry. In my opinion, Michigan needs to go back to the Harbaugh way and rely on the run game. Let's feed Edwards and Mullings as much as we can and then use play-action. 17 carries for 80 yards from our running backs is not going to get it done.

One of the biggest advantages Texas had yesterday was on third down. They finished the game 10/16 and Michigan finished 3/12. Texas had a great game plan and they seemed to have a lot of manageable third downs and they did this by smart play calls on second down to get close to the sticks even if they didn't convert.

I am not going to pretend that I have the offensive mind that Kirk Campbell or Sherrone Moore do but I hope they watch the film and make the proper adjustments. Overall, yesterday was a rough one. It was the exact opposite kind of game that Michigan wants offensively. This team is not built to play from behind and that's what they were faced with all day.

Michigan needs to establish our identity and I think you do that behind Donovan Edwards and Kalel Mullings. Go back to boring, hard-nosed, Michigan football. If the Wolverines do that and give our defense a rest, this team has a chance to get back on track.
