Who Should be Michigan's Next Defensive Coordinator?
By Cullen Corr
Mike Elston
Elston is the Wolverine's current defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. He played outside linebacker for Michigan football from 1993-96. He then worked on the Michigan staff until 2000. Before coming back to Michigan, he served as the defensive line coach and associate head coach at Notre Dame. He came back to Michigan when he wasn't promoted to DC at Notre Dame after Brian Kelley left Notre Dame for LSU.
Elston is another great developer as well as an elite recruiter. However he's in the same boat as Clinkscale with not having as much experience with Michigan's current scheme before his time on the staff the previous two seasons. But like Clinkscale, Elston is a really talented young coach who the Wolverines really don't want to lose. There's also been a lot of talk about him and Clinkscale serving as co-defensive coordinators.
If Michigan is dead set on running the exact same scheme Elston and Clinkscale may not be as obvious of candidates as they seem.
