Two coaches that Sherrone Moore must retain for Michigan football
There is plenty of work to do for Sherrone Moore. The new Michigan football head coach has announced just one hire for his coaching staff and that was tight ends coach Grant Newsome moving to offensive line coach.
New reports indicate that Michigan football is trying to hire a new tight ends coach with a tie to the program in former player Kevin Koger. However, a bigger priority for Moore, in addition to hiring offensive and defensive coordinators, should be the retention of Mike Elston and Steve Clinkscale.
Elston has been the defensive line coach for the past two seasons. There has been some concern that Jim Harbaugh could poach him. Elston played for Michigan and was hired away from Notre Dame. He's been a vital asset on the recruiting trail. His evaluations are spot on and his ability to develop defensive lineman is top notch.
Michigan football can't lose Clink or Mike Elston
Losing Elston would be a blow. There's no way around that. Losing Steve Clinkscale would also be a blow for Michigan football. Clink has been the defensive passing game coordinator since the 2021 season and was the co-defensive coordinator in 2022 and 2023.
Retaining both won't be easy. Harbaugh could try to hire them away and if Moore isn't promoting either to defensive coordinator, it's at least going to take a pay raise. There are other titles such as assistant head coach too that are available.
The bottom line is that Moore needs to use whatever means necessary to keep both guys on staff. In terms of recruiting, and development, they are too essential to lose, especially if continuity is going to be a thing.
Frankly, if the choice for defensive coordinator is Clink or Jim Leonhard, I'd roll with Clink. But as long as Moore can keep both on staff, that's what is important.
