Thoughts on Michigan football decision to start Alex Orji
You had a feeling after the way Michigan football finished against Arkansas State that a change was coming at quarterback and that change was made official on Monday by head coach Sherrone Moore.
Davis Warren started the first three games of the Michigan football season but didn't acquit himself well. Warren threw three interceptions on Saturday, which forced Sherrone Moore to take the move against Arkansas State.
Moore went to Alex Orji who did engineer a touchdown drive and wound up throwing his second touchdown pass of the season. However, he did miss a wide-open Fred Moore on a play that would have resulted in a touchdown.
Thoughts on Alex Orji as Michigan football starter
I've thought this should have been the path for Michigan football all along. Davis Warren is a decent quarterback. He's got a good arm, but the running game hasn't been working that great, and he's turning the ball over.
So a pro-style offense simply isn't going to work, especially when Michigan football is lacking pro-caliber wide receivers. Colston Loveland is an NFL dude -- a first-round pick at tight end, but he left the game on Saturday with an injury.
What Michigan football needs to do now in invest fully in the run-game and an option/zone-read offense not unlike what we used to see out of Rich Rod or Urban Meyer in his days with the Buckeyes.
Sherrone Moore will have to put his own spin on it, but that's the path forward. Michigan football will have to figure out how to pass the ball. But if the Wolverines can at least run the ball effectively, which they should be able to do with Orji and protect the ball, at least they'll have a fighting chance.
