Things progressed quickly between former Youngstown State wide receiver C.J. Charleston and Michigan football. He was offered earlier this week. On Tuesday, he picked up a crystal ball to the Wolverines and on Wednesday, he announced his commitment.

This is a key addition for the Wolverines, who desperately needed to add some depth at wide receiver. After spring ball, Michigan football was down to five scholarship wide receivers. Even the coaching staff admitted that more depth was needed.

Michigan football is projected to land former Wolverine Amorion Walker. He transferred to Ole Miss and is expected to transfer back. However, the Wolverines needed more than one body and they got an experienced player in Charleston, who has 53 career receptions.

What C.J. Charleston commitment means for Michigan football

The numbers might not jump off the page. But last season, the 6-foot wideout from Ohio hauled in 33 passes for 503 yards and four touchdowns. He's also got experience playing outside and in the slot, which makes him even more attractive to Michigan football.

There's no question that you have to account for him playing in the FCS before, but the FCS is better than it gets credit for. Those guys can play and sometimes, new scenary can bring out a whole new player.

The reality is that Michigan football just needs the Charleston from last season. The bulk of the targets should go to Tyler Morris, Semaj Morgan, and Fredrick Moore. After that, it will be Walker (if he re-joins the program), Kendrick Bell, Peyton O'Leary, and Charleston competing for snaps.

Honestly, that still sounds thin, but with Colston Loveland and all the talent at tight end, as well as running back, Michigan football will have enough to get bye next season. The hope is that Walker can emerge as a deep threat on the outside. If he's that and Charleston can give you 20-30 receptions, that's all Michigan needs.

Charleston doesn't have to be a superstar. But Michigan needs a solid depth piece, who can play starter snaps if needed and Charleston is well-suited for that role in 2024.
