Michigan football is a finalist for 5-star 2026 running back
Michigan football has built some solid momentum on the recruiting trail over the summer and the Wolverines are looking for that to carry over in the 2026 class.
In some ways, it already has with the commitment of top-100 quarterback Brady Hart. Hart is one of the top-10 quarterbacks in the 2026 class out of Cocoa, Florida. He also started his senior season off with a bang after throwing five first-half touchdowns.
Michigan football running backs coach Tony Alford has also been focused on the 2026 class and one of the main targets has been five-star running back Savion Hiter. The 6-foot, 200-pound running back out of Virginia is ranked 29th overall in the 2026 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.
Hiter visited Michigan football for its recruiting BBQ at the end of July and that was enough for them to be included as a finalist in his top five on Thursday which also included Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio State, and Penn State.
According to Chad Simmons of On3.com, Tennessee and Georgia made "strong impressions" on the five-star running back over the summer. He also called his Michigan football visit "great."
Handicapping Michigan's chances with 5-star running back
This recruitment is a little hard to read right now. Tennessee and Georgia have created some buzz but you can never count out Ohio State either.
Michigan football has generated some of its own buzz and that latest visit moved the needle, at least a little bit. It was also the second visit in 2024 for Hiter to Michigan after he visited in the spring.
Ohio State and Georgia have each hosted Hiter twice for visits this year which is why they have a slight lead according to the On3 prediction machine. Tennessee has been trending up on the recrutiing trail, in general, so don't count them out either.
Regardless, making the top five is good news for Michigan football, but the Wolverines feel in the middle of the top five, instead of near the top.
