John Beilein has done a lot of great things for Michigan basketball. But one of the best things is what he did on Saturday, joining the head coaching search fray to help the Wolverines secure Dusty May.

Josh Henschke of Rivals posted on X Sunday morning that Beilein, the greatest Michigan basketball head coach of all time, was part of a contingent that met with May on Saturday.

"John Beilein and Warde Manuel teamed up tonight to bring Dusty May to Ann Arbor, pulling the rug from underneath Louisville," Henschke wrote.

Known Michigan insider John U. Bacon also posted about the Michigan basketball coaching search and said that Beilein had a key role to play.

"Some insiders say Manuel only let Howard go under pressure from the president and regents, and Beilein delivered Dusty May. Nonetheless, the end result for Michigan is probably the best possible one on both fronts," Bacon wrote.

"And in fairness, former coach John Beilein deserves a lot of the credit here, too, helping to make the connections and the pitch," he added.

It feels like this doesn't happen without Beilein because May was trending toward Louisville. Maybe Beilein was the difference. I don't really care. I'm just glad Michigan got it done. It's an awesome assist by Beilein though, who seems invested in Michigan basketball getting back on track.

Dusty May is announced, says he "cant wait"

Michigan made the official announcement on Sunday morning. May also issued his first comments on being the Wolverines new head coach.

“The University of Michigan is among the elite institutions in the world and it is both an honor and privilege to be named its head men’s basketball coach,” May said. "I am deeply committed to reigniting the proud tradition of Michigan Basketball. I can’t wait to get started.”

There are lots of questions about the roster moving forward. We looked at three possible additions via FAU from the transfer portal, but the good news is that because of the quick hire, Michigan is well-positioned to add to its roster and hopefully accelerate the rebuild.
