Joel Klatt projects Michigan football to make 12-team playoff
What's a realistic expectation for Michigan football in the first season under head coach Sherrone Moore?
The Wolverines went 15-0 last season but have to replace 10 starters on offense and some key players on defense too. Yes, Mason Graham, Will Johnson, and Kenneth Grant are back, along with Makari Paige, Josaiah Stewart, Derrick Moore, and Rod Moore, althoug he's out with an injury.
Michigan football has question marks on offense. The quarterback competition is a two-horse race which isn't likely to be decided before the start of the 2024 season. It might take until after the first game or two before the Wolverines know who their quarterback is.
Even with that, Michigan football is ranked in the top of the AP preseason poll. The Coaches Poll also has Michigan ranked in the top 10. Most fans are hoping for at least a playoff berth.
That would give the Wolverines a chance to defend their title and keep their playoff streak alive. Being one of the to 12 teams to make the playoff is realistic for the Wolverines, at least according to Joel Klatt who has Michigan making the playoff as the No. 11 seed.
Michigan would play Texas again in a rematch of Week 2. However, as a No. 11 seed, the Wolverines would be getting the final at-large berth which means there are probably 2-3 regular-season losses.
Klatt predicted that Texas would knock off the Wolverines in the playoff and advance to the national championship game where they lose to Ohio State in Klatt's projection. The Fox analyst believes in the Buckeyes this season but they have to beat Michigan football first.
