It's early but USC game feels like a must-win for Michigan football
This USC game for Michigan football is huge for the state of the program in the 2024 season. The Wolverines currently sit at 2-1 after two wins where they were heavily favored and a disappointing loss as an underdog to Texas. The Trojans come to Ann Arbor after a bye week and a huge early season win against LSU. USC is a confident bunch coming into this game looking to hand the Wolverines their second loss at home of the season.
Is this really a must win for Michigan football?
This game has the feel of a must win for Michigan for a couple of reasons. The first reason is the mental state of the team. There was some air let out of Michigan's sails after the loss to Texas.
There is also a lot of uncertainty about the offense and quarterback position surrounding this team one more poor performance could put some serious doubt in the minds of fans and players alike. A second loss four weeks into the season with a difficult remaining schedule would be a nightmare for this team.
The second reason is to remain firmly in the playoff hunt for the rest of the season. I am confident this Michigan football team will be in the playoff with an 11-1 or a 10-2 record. Michigan still has games to play against Illinois, Michigan State, Oregon, and Ohio State and so that turns this game into a must-win, or else they will be forced to run the table against that gauntlet of a schedule.
Prediction
I have come to realize that I am a little too optimisitc by nature when it comes to Michigan football. I am always hoping for the best and I convince myself the best is going to happen. That is not going to change this week but I believe they have what it takes in this game. A 3:30 start in a striped out Big House is going to be as good of an environment as there is in college football.
I believe Alex Orji is going to take advantage of his opportunity and play smart football. The coaches are going to make the necessary adjustments and create a smart game plan to win a close, ugly football game. Michigan controls the ball, gets a key turnover, and plays the field position game all day.
Final score: Michigan 23, USC 21.
