Highlights, gut reactions to a Michigan football win over USC

The Michigan football team was staring defeat in the face when Kalel Mullings battered down the door to an incredible come-from-behind win.

519. Final Score . 27. 485. Final. 24

Michigan football pulled off one of the gutsiest wins you'll ever see in college football, rallying from four points down to score a touchdown from the one-yard line with 37 seconds left. And they did it all without the threat of the forward pass.

It was incredible to see. Despite USC defenders everywhere in the box, Michigan football kept feeding Mullings and against all odds, Mullings kept getting yards and eventually his second touchdown of the game, which proved to be the game-winner.

Things got ugly in the second half. But Michigan football needed this win, desperately. Frankly, it saved the season -- for now at least and bought the coaching staff time to figure things out.

After two rushing touchdowns in the first half from Donovan Edwards and Kalel Mullings gave Michigan a 14-0 lead. USC rallied and trimmed the deficit to 14-10 in the third quarter before a Will Johnson pick-6 made it 20-10 Wolverines.

Michigan stripped sacked Miler Moss, the USC quarterback, and Kenneth Grant recovered only to fumble it back and allow the Trojans another shot at a touchdown, which they took advantage of.

When USC scored midway through the fourth quarter, it felt hopeless for the Wolverines. The offense had less than 15 yards in the second half before the final drive then drove 89 yards to win the game.

I don't know if I have ever seen anything like that, but Kalel Mullings put the Wolverines on his back. That's one gut reaction to the 27-24 win for Michigan football and here are the rest.

Gut reactions for Michigan football win over USC

  • Kalel Mullings (17 carries for 159 yards) effort on the final drive is one of the most impressive individual efforts I have ever seen.
  • You can see why Alex Orji wasn’t the starting quarterback coming out of camp, but man, there has to be more creative ways to use him.
  • Stop rotating the best players off the field.
  • Josaiah Stewart should always be on the field on third down.
  • The same goes for Derrick Moore.
  • It’s hard to understand why Mullings went such long stretches without the ball. He’s the one dude on this offense who needs it.
  • It was good to see Donovan Edwards score a touchdown. But that fumble can’t happen.
  • One positive about Alex Orji: no turnovers.
  • Championship effort from the defense.
  • Will Johnson might be the second-best cornerback in program history.
  • The future is still murky but who cares!
  • Go Blue!
