FCS head coach has best take on Michigan football, Connor Stalions and sign-stealing

One of the best reactions to the Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal involving Michigan football came from an FCS head coach.

There have been a lot of interesting takes about Michigan football and Connor Stalions following the documentary "Sign Stealer" was released Tuesday on Nextflix.

One thing that's really interesting is how people continue to act as though Michigan football wasn't punished. In fact, suspending Jim Harbaugh for three games -- the three most important games of the regular season, was a huge punishment.

Imagine taking away Urban Meyer for "The Game." That's a much bigger penalty than not having him against Akron. So Michigan did suffer a huge punishment, without little investigation. They still won despite that punishment, so people like Danny Kannell want them punished again.

Kanell is sounding like a Michigan State or Ohio State fan, saying everything Jim Harbaugh did was "tainted." It's preposterous. Stealing signs is legal. Connor Stalions may have broken a minor rule to get scouting information but he's not the only one and two, it's a minimal advantage at best.

That advantage was more than canceled out with Harbaugh suspended. Stalions also wasn't there for the final eight games of the season and Michigan football still didn't lose. So anyone saying Michigan football won because of Connor Stalions is allergic to facts and disconnected with reality.

Michigan football won "fair and square" as the NCAA president said. Stalions broke a minor rule, but how would Jim Harbaugh have known that? He's not overseeing the sign-stealing guy. He just assumed, like the rest of the staff, that Stalions used the TV copy, which isn't against the rules.

Unlike Kanell, East Tennesse State head coach Tre Lamb, the head coach, offered up a very level-headed take on the whole affair.

Lamb said, "If you don't hide and change your signals, that's on you." He also started by saying: "Michigan won 40 games in 3 years, a national championship because they had elite players/ recruited best OL, top 5 QB, best defensive personnel."

The FCS head coach also said he has had every signal and gotten smoked. He's also had zero signals and still smoked somebody.

"Connor Stalions is not innocent. Going to scout in person and on the sidelines is low-class in the business. I think Harbaugh knew he was stealing signs but did not know the details of how. Sign stealing decides very little in the results of a game."

Stalions probably broke some minor rules but to say that Michigan won three Big Ten titles and a national championship because of that is just silly. The Wolverines should pay a fine, which will likely be the result, plus whatever punishment Stalions will face.
