Davis Warren is named the Michigan football starting quarterback

Sherrone Moore and Michigan football held things close to the vest throughout the offseason as far as the quarterback position and that didn't change in Week 1.

Michigan football didn't announce a starting quarterback until right before kickoff. Davis Warren was a former four-star recruit who battled cancer before walking on to play for the Wolverines.

Now, he's the Wolverines starting quarterback.

According to the NBC Sports broadcast, quoting offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell, Warren has as much talent as J.J. McCarthy, although maybe not quite as accurate.

The first drive of Warren's career ended with a touchdown, although Michigan football used Alex Orji to get the ball in the end zone. Last season, Orji was used almost exclusively as a runner. But Campbell called a play-action pass which led to a touchdown to Donovan Edwards.

Thoughts on Davis Warrren as the starting QB

I've said all offseason that if Michigan football can get another quarterback who can simply protect the ball and be accurate, that the Wolverines can win. They won the Big Ten title with Cade McNamara in 2021 and I have no reason to believe that Davis Warren can't reproduce that season.

Warren certainly looked the part on the first drive. But Orji is going to have a role. He's too good of an athlete to keep on the sidelines and I loved how the Wolverines got him involved right away.

Maybe a two-quarterback system will work for the Wolverines. Or maybe Warren will emerge as the true No. 1 quarterback and Orji will be just a special package guy.

Either way, it's a great story and I can't wait to see how the Wolverines make it work and if one of these guys truly grabs the job for good tonight and in the next few weeks.
