Could Dominick Giudice be Michigan football starting center?
Some programs talk about competition but Michigan football lives by it. Jim Harbaugh always said football is a true meritocracy and we are seeing that once again on the U-M offensive line.
We have already seen it on the right tackle spot. Sam Webb is reporting that Evan Link is going to start for Michigan football on Saturday. It remains to be seen because Andrew Gentry and Jeff Persi are still battling, but the 6-foot-8 sophomore has taken a huge step forward.
On the MGoBlog Roundtable, Webb talked about how Link has improved as run blocker, saying that he was always good in pass protection.
Another surprise starter for Michigan football O-line?
However, Webb hinted at another surprise starter on the offensive line for Michigan football and that could be senior Dominick Giudice beating out Greg Crippen and Raheem Anderson for the starting center job.
Many assumed the job would go to Crippen. He seemed ready to start last season if needed and frankly, I would have been comfortable with Crippen or Anderson starting.
Yet, according to Webb, neither has "faltered" this fall. Dominick Giudice has just continued to emerge.
After coming to Michigan as a defensive line, thanks to Jim Harbaugh offering him a scholarship without the other coaches knowing it, according to Webb, Giudice eventually switched over to the offensive line.
Giudice played in three games last season but was twice named Scout Team Player of the Week for his efforts. Now, it appears the 6-foot-4, 310-pounder is in the lead to be the starting center.
It's a crazy story. Giudice was ranked in the 1600s when he committed and now, he could be the starting center for Michigan football, which is a reminder that Jim Harbaugh knows football players and also, that true competition is alive and well in Ann Arbor.
The best will always play and that's how it should be.
