5 things to watch for Michigan football vs. Washington in CFP National Championship
Can Michigan contain Michael Penix Jr.?
Michael Penix Jr. against the Michigan defense will be one of the defining matchups of this game, along with the Michigan secondary against Washington's wide receivers.
Penix doesn't just throw the ball well -- he makes quick decisions. He's going to give his receivers a shot to make some plays down the field and make no mistake, they are going to make some, just like the Ohio State Buckeyes did against the Wolverines in each of the past three seasons.
That doesn't mean I think Michigan football can give up 430 yards passing. However, the games against Ohio State over the past three seasons should help U-M prepare for Penix. This defense was built to stop this kind of offense. Or least to limit it.
Forcing Washington into a couple of field goals instead of a touchdown, as well as getting another stop or two can be the difference between allowing 35 points or 20-27. Michigan will have to get pressure and it will have to win a few times on the money downs, and in the red zone.
