Cornerbacks emerged in battle for No. 2

There is some work to do this spring for Michigan football in the secondary. The Wolverines have a new secondary coach. They will also have some new pieces as Rod Moore is out for the season due to injury. Keon Sabb transferred. Josh Wallace and Mike Sainristil are headed to the NFL.

The good news is that Michigan has some nice options to start opposite Will Johnson, who is ranked by Pro Football Focus as the best returning cornerback in all of college football. Johnson would be a top-10 pick in the 2024 NFL draft if he was available and some have even suggested he could be in the mix for the No. 1 overall pick.

There are two starting positions though but DJ Waller and Jyaire Hill are staking their claim. Both players saw action last season in reserve roles. Waller played in 11 games. Hill played in four and preserved his redshirt. Waller is 6-foot-3. Hill is 6-foot-2 and according to Sherrone Moore, they have stood out this spring. They are long and athletic and should be stellar in man coverage.

Ja'Den McBurrows is the name to know at the nickel spot and as long as those three guys are ready to be regular contributors, the Wolverines should be fine. So far, so good.
